FAQs
Common Questions
Is Crown Currency Exchange cheaper than a bank?
In most cases, yes. Banks typically apply a rate margin on top of a flat transaction fee, while Crown charges no commission or fees on any exchange.
Do you have a currency exchange in the CBD?
Yes. We have stores in most major Australian CBDs, plus suburban locations across the country, more than 65 in total. You can find us in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Hobart and Adelaide.
Fees and Rates
Does Crown Currency Exchange charge fees or commissions?
No, we don’t charge fees or commission on any transaction. The rate you're quoted is the complete cost, nothing added at the counter.
Why doesn't Crown show exchange rates on the website?
Exchange rates move throughout the trading day. Rather than display a rate that may already be outdated, we provide live rates in-store or by phone so you always receive the current, accurate figure for your transaction.
Does Crown price match competitors?
Yes, Crown offers a Best Price Guarantee. If you find a better same-day rate at a legitimate local competitor, bring it to us and we'll match it. Terms apply, ask in-store for details.
Exchange Process
How long does a currency exchange take at Crown?
Most transactions are completed in minutes. All currencies are in stock, so no pre-order is needed. We hold more than 60.
Can I order currency in advance?
Yes. Place an order in-store or by phone, then collect it when it suits you.
Does Crown Currency buy back leftover foreign currency?
Yes, Crown buys back most foreign banknotes at all locations with no commission charged. Coins are generally not accepted but are collected for our charity partners, feel free to bring them in.
Do I need ID to exchange currency?
For transactions of AUD $1,000 or more, we're required to sight valid photo ID under Australian anti-money-laundering law. For smaller exchanges, ID generally isn't needed, but it's always a good idea to bring some.
Cash for Travel
Why should I take cash overseas?
Cash has real advantages when travelling: no surcharges, no unexpected conversion markups, no risk of of being out of signal, and it's still accepted almost everywhere. Most travellers do best with some cash on hand for markets, tips, transport, smaller vendors and remote locations.
Is cash still accepted overseas?
Yes, though how much you'll need varies by destination. While card payments are accepted in cities, most rural areas still only expect cash. The Pacific Islands and parts of Southeast Asia remain more cash-reliant overall. Having local currency on arrival avoids queues and poor airport rates wherever you land.
When should I exchange my currency?
As soon as your travel is confirmed. Exchange rates fluctuate daily and can't be predicted. Exchanging early locks in your travel budget and removes rate uncertainty from your holiday planning.
