Destination FAQs

Which currency do I need for my destination?

Japan uses the yen (JPY), Indonesia including Bali the rupiah (IDR), Thailand the baht (THB), the United States the US dollar (USD) and most of Europe the euro (EUR). Croatia switched from the kuna to the euro in 2023. Each Crown destination guide names the local currency and what you'll need it for.

Do I need a different currency for each country in Europe?

Not usually. Most of the European Union uses the euro, including France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany, Portugal, Ireland, Croatia and Austria. The exceptions travellers most often miss are the United Kingdom (pound), Switzerland (franc), the Czech Republic (koruna), Hungary (forint), Poland (złoty), and Denmark, Sweden and Norway, which each use their own krone or krona.

Is cash or card better where I'm going?

It's important to have both. Cash is best for day-to-day spending like markets, taxis, tips and street food, so you're not racking up card fees on every small purchase. A card is handy for hotels, bigger purchases and as a backup. Vietnam, Bali, Thailand and the Pacific Islands still run largely on cash once you're away from big hotels. Each destination guide tells you how much to lean on each.

How much cash should I take?

It depends on where you're going, how long you're staying and how you like to travel. Each destination guide gives a guide to daily spending, and the HolidAi Planner can work out a budget for your trip.

I'm visiting several countries. Which currency should I take?

Take local cash for each country where you can, so you're not converting twice. For a multi-country trip, start with the currency for your first stop, then add the others. For help working out the right mix, talk to our currency experts in store or by phone, or use the HolidAi Planner.

Where can I buy the currency for my destination before I go?
