Which other countries use "Rupees" as currency?


Around the 6th century BCE when Indian rupee was first used in ancient India. Ancient India was one of the earliest regions to issue its own currency in the shape of coins, alongside the Chinese wen and the Lydian staters.


In 1946, Indonesia began using the “rupiah” as their currency. The word “rupiah” derives from the Sanskrit word “rupya,” which means “silver.”


The rupee of Mauritius was introduced in 1877, replacing the Indian rupee, the British pound, and the Mauritian dollar.


Nepal began using rupees as their currency in 1932, replacing a number of various currencies previously in use.


The Pakistani rupee entered circulation in 1947, following the breakdown of the British Raj. Initially, Pakistan utilised British Indian coins and banknotes with the word “Pakistan” stamped on them. In 1948, new coins and banknotes were released.


The Seychelles rupee was introduced in 1914 and is a closed currency, meaning it may only be used within the country’s borders. If you bring home Seychelles rupees and wish to exchange them for Australian dollars or another currency, you will be unable to do so.

The Maldives

The Maldives, located at the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent, adopted the rufiyaa in 1947.
