1. Avoid currency exchange kiosks at airports

Due to captive audiences and high overheads, airport kiosks are often one of the expensive places to buy foreign currency. We recommend converting your Australian dollars (AUD) to Kenyan shillings (KES) before you leave to get a better exchange rate and have KES on hand when you land.

Which other countries use the Kenyan shilling?

Only Kenya uses the Kenyan shilling as their official currency. After the East African shilling was discontinued, the Kenyan shilling was launched in 1966. From the 1920s until early in the 1960s, when Kenya and other African countries gained independence from Britain, that currency was used throughout the parts of east Africa under British influence. Kenya started issuing new banknotes and coins in 2018 due to recent revisions in the constitution that disallow images of individual people.
